If you\u2019ve ever moved before, you know the process can be overwhelming. Between packing boxes, trying to find people to help you move, and the overall costs associated with it, moving can take a physical and emotional toll on you. In fact, it\u2019s even been noted as one of the top 5 most stressful life events<\/a>. But it doesn\u2019t have to be this way, especially if you do it with a pet. While moving with a pet might add some additional work, it can actually benefit your mental health and lessen some of the stress you\u2019re experiencing throughout the process. Just ask Dominyc Taylor-Pollitt, Worldwide Animal Travel\u2019s new General Manager, who recently moved to Canada from South Africa with not one, but six of her pets.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy pets are my family, without them, even just one of them, would feel like someone was missing. Knowing that they would be joining us a few days later meant we had our reunion, cuddles and unconditional love to look forward to,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

In addition to the joy and excitement the anticipation of being reunited brings, pets actually have a physiological impact on humans, and can significantly lower blood pressure and heart rate <\/a>while performing stressful mental tasks.<\/p>\n

Dominyc surely felt the pressure during this move: \u201cThe most stressful part of moving to Canada was doing it during a global pandemic and having the goal posts moved multiple times with paperwork, flight routings or lack thereof.\u201d Despite the chaos and complications caused by COVID-19, she successfully moved to Canada at the end of September. After a 4-day journey involving three stopovers to Johannesburg, Amsterdam and Calgary, Dominyc\u2019spets reached their new home, Vancouver, as well.<\/p>\n

While her pets helped her cope throughout the process, she knew she had to reciprocate by preparing them for the long journey ahead. Not only is relocating a stressful situation for humans, but it\u2019s also stressful for pets. With that in mind, Dominyc knew crate training<\/a> would play a key role in keeping her pets comforted during and after the move: \u201cMy pets were all crate trained and I cannot express how important that is. Even in our new home, having the familiar crates around and keeping their routine made them feel comfortable.\u201d If your pet isn\u2019t crate trained and uncomfortable in their new surroundings, they could become flight risks or experience anxiety. And the better prepared your pet is for their move, the less likely you\u2019ll have to deal with these potentially stress-inducing situations.<\/p>\n

Although Dominyc\u2019s journey to Canada with her family may not have been the easiest, she recognizes the one thing that got her through it: \u201cPatience; you need to be patient with yourself while you adjust to your new life, patient with the new systems and take each challenge as a worldly life lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a pet owner, you may find yourself explaining that looking after a pet is not that different to looking after a child. Although they are lower maintenance in many ways, there are also key similarities. Ensuring that you feed them, play with them, give them enough attention, and take them for medical check-ups are all crucial to keeping them happy and healthy. But beyond food and water, exercise is arguably the most important thing for your pet\u2014 especially if you have a dog. Even if you live in Canada like us, temperate weather is not a good excuse for neglecting exercise during the winter months.<\/p>

Take them for walks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

Despite rain, snow, sleet and ice, it is important to take your pup outside for a little cardio. Simply walking down the street (if that\u2019s as far as you can make it) will be better than nothing for their little hearts, lungs, joints, and bones. Be sure to dress the both of you accordingly\u2014 dog jackets and booties are not just for people who like accessorizing, but often necessary to protect your dog from the elements. If your neighbourhood is heavily salted and your dog refuses paw-wear, be mindful of where they are stepping and wash them off afterwards.<\/p>

Take them to the park<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

On days when the weather is not too <\/em>frightful, time at the park is also enjoyable for dogs, even during colder months. Parks (especially dedicated dog parks) typically allow them more freedom and space to run around, which is great for playing and socializing. Although they can\u2019t exactly tell you, these activities are often necessary to keep your dog happy throughout the grey and gloomy stretch between November and March. Bring a ball with you for a game of fetch, and wear proper footwear so you can run around with them. If other \u201cspirited\u201d pups are there at the same time, be careful they\u2019re not roughhousing or overexerting too much.<\/p>

Play with them indoors<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

There will be treacherous days throughout the winter where Rex or Lucy should only be let out to quickly do their \u201cbusiness.\u201d When that happens, it can be all too tempting to spend the entire time snuggling together on the couch. But in between naps, try grabbing their favourite toys to encourage some activity. If your dog is not particularly playful, entice him or her to move around with a treat ball or another type of food puzzle that can still keep them busy, entertained, and encourage them to take a break from lying down.<\/p>

Ultimately, remember that dogs are like humans in many ways. Since cold and wintery weather conditions can make you both feel down, be sure to keep your mental and physical states in mind by getting up and at \u2018em each day.
