Over the last few months, we\u2019ve been inundated with information about how to keep ourselves safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, but what about our beloved animal companions?\u00a0 Now that we\u2019re in the midst of a second wave, it\u2019s important to take precautions to keep both you and your pet safe if you haven\u2019t already been doing so.\u00a0 With so much still unknown about COVID-19, we recommend following these guidelines to provide you and your pet with a little peace of mind during these trying times.<\/p>\n

As we continue to navigate these unprecedented times together, keep in mind the following safety precautions when it comes to keeping your pet safe and healthy.<\/p>\n

Maintain physical distancing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Animals need exercise, especially dogs!\u00a0 When it comes to taking your four-legged friend for their daily walks, be sure to maintain the recommended 6 feet distance from others.\u00a0 You may want to use your dog\u2019s lead as a way to ensure you’re keeping the correct distance, provided it\u2019s at least 6 feet long.\u00a0 Try to avoid places that are crowded, and if you plan on visiting an off-leash dog park, we recommend visiting during off-peak hours to minimize close interaction with others.\u00a0 If possible, you can also socialize your dog with other dogs from your social circle by planning playdates.<\/p>\n

If you own a cat, we recommend keeping your cat indoors as much as possible at this time.<\/p>\n

Keep your pets away if you fall ill<\/strong><\/p>\n

While it\u2019s unlikely that you\u2019d transmit the virus to your pet, it\u2019s always better to be safe than sorry.\u00a0 Currently, there have been a few reports of human-to-animal transmission so for that reason, we recommend erring on the side of caution. There\u2019s no need to be paranoid about your pet spreading the virus, but keep the following in mind if you do get sick.<\/p>\n

If you become sick, try and keep as much distance from your pet as possible.\u00a0 We know it\u2019s hard, but it\u2019s in their interest!\u00a0 If other people reside in your household, have them take care of your pet while you recover from your illness.\u00a0 If this isn\u2019t possible, limit your interaction with your pet as much as possible, and refrain from letting them lick you, especially on your face and hands.\u00a0 We also suggest wearing a mask whenever you come into close contact to care for your pet.\u00a0 If your pet requires daily exercise, such as a dog, coordinate someone who can take over this responsibility for the time being, or consider hiring a dog walker temporarily.<\/p>\n

As we\u2019re currently already experiencing the second-wave and as the flu season is upon us, we recommend planning for this scenario in advance by allocating an emergency caregiver<\/a> for your pet.\u00a0 This way, you can focus on your recovery instead of scrambling to find someone to care for your animal.<\/p>\n

Practice good hygiene<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just like you\u2019re probably already doing for yourself, continue to practice good hygiene when caring for your pet.\u00a0 The Government of Canada<\/a> recommends washing your hands often, especially before and after touching your pet, their food and supplies; avoiding coughing and sneezing around your pet; and avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands.\u00a0 If you use sanitizing products in your household, ensure that the room is well-ventilated so your pet doesn\u2019t become irritated by potentially harmful toxins, and keep any toxic materials out of reach.<\/p>\n

While evidence of animals contracting COVID-19 from humans is limited, it certainly doesn\u2019t hurt to take the extra precautions to ensure the safety of our beloved pets.<\/p>\n

As a pet owner, you may find yourself explaining that looking after a pet is not that different to looking after a child. Although they are lower maintenance in many ways, there are also key similarities. Ensuring that you feed them, play with them, give them enough attention, and take them for medical check-ups are all crucial to keeping them happy and healthy. But beyond food and water, exercise is arguably the most important thing for your pet\u2014 especially if you have a dog. Even if you live in Canada like us, temperate weather is not a good excuse for neglecting exercise during the winter months.<\/p>

Take them for walks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

Despite rain, snow, sleet and ice, it is important to take your pup outside for a little cardio. Simply walking down the street (if that\u2019s as far as you can make it) will be better than nothing for their little hearts, lungs, joints, and bones. Be sure to dress the both of you accordingly\u2014 dog jackets and booties are not just for people who like accessorizing, but often necessary to protect your dog from the elements. If your neighbourhood is heavily salted and your dog refuses paw-wear, be mindful of where they are stepping and wash them off afterwards.<\/p>

Take them to the park<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

On days when the weather is not too <\/em>frightful, time at the park is also enjoyable for dogs, even during colder months. Parks (especially dedicated dog parks) typically allow them more freedom and space to run around, which is great for playing and socializing. Although they can\u2019t exactly tell you, these activities are often necessary to keep your dog happy throughout the grey and gloomy stretch between November and March. Bring a ball with you for a game of fetch, and wear proper footwear so you can run around with them. If other \u201cspirited\u201d pups are there at the same time, be careful they\u2019re not roughhousing or overexerting too much.<\/p>

Play with them indoors<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

There will be treacherous days throughout the winter where Rex or Lucy should only be let out to quickly do their \u201cbusiness.\u201d When that happens, it can be all too tempting to spend the entire time snuggling together on the couch. But in between naps, try grabbing their favourite toys to encourage some activity. If your dog is not particularly playful, entice him or her to move around with a treat ball or another type of food puzzle that can still keep them busy, entertained, and encourage them to take a break from lying down.<\/p>

Ultimately, remember that dogs are like humans in many ways. Since cold and wintery weather conditions can make you both feel down, be sure to keep your mental and physical states in mind by getting up and at \u2018em each day.
