Are you Team Joe Exotic or Team Carole Baskin? Hopefully, you\u2019ve answered neither! If you\u2019re not sure what we\u2019re talking about, you\u2019re likely one of the few people who has yet to watch Netflix\u2019s Tiger King. If you\u2019re wondering why we say \u201cneither\u201d, the short answer is because keeping exotic animals as pets isn\u2019t cool (although if you ask Carole, she owns a \u201csanctuary\u201d.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

In light of National Endangered Species Day<\/a> on May 15th, we\u2019d like to discuss why you shouldn\u2019t keep exotic animals as pets (if it wasn\u2019t already obvious.)<\/p>\n

It<\/strong>\u2019s a Public Safety Risk<\/strong><\/p>\n

Imagine you\u2019re on a leisurely walk in your suburban neighbourhood only to cross paths with a tiger, ape, or snake. Surely you\u2019d be frightened. Or perhaps, you\u2019ve crossed paths with a well-dressed monkey in IKEA<\/a>. You may feel a little less threatened, but perplexed nonetheless.\u00a0 Regardless of the scenario, exotic animals escaping their enclosures poses a high public safety risk, and it doesn\u2019t always have a happy ending<\/a>. Wild animals are unpredictable, no matter how domesticated they may seem to be. If you think you\u2019re scared coming into contact with these animals, imagine how they feel being in an unknown environment. It\u2019s in your best interest and the interest of those around you to stick with other common, less dangerous household pets such as dogs, cats, hamsters, or fish.<\/p>\n

You’re Risking Your Health<\/strong><\/p>\n

There have been many recorded cases throughout history of humans contracting diseases through close contact with animals. The herpes B virus, which can be fatal to humans, is one example<\/a>. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>, \u201canimals can sometimes carry harmful germs that can spread to people and cause illness – these are known as zoonotic diseases.\u201d The best way to prevent animal-to-human transmission of diseases is to admire animals from afar, and not come into close contact with them to begin with.<\/p>\n

You<\/strong>\u2019re Contributing to the Abuse of Animals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Exotic animals don\u2019t just randomly appear in a household one day. These animals are often violently captured, transported and housed<\/a> in gruelling living conditions until they are sold.\u00a0 Many of these animals will die during transport, and their very existence as a species may even be at stake due to overexploitation<\/a>. Even though you may never plan on owning an exotic animal, you may unintentionally be supporting the trade. Make a conscious effort not to support roadside zoos or anything similar to them.<\/p>\n

No matter how cool, cute or interesting you think it may be to own an exotic animal, don\u2019t do it.\u00a0\u00a0 Instead, be a \u201ccool cat\u201d and spread awareness about endangered species on May 15th by using the hashtag #EndangeredSpeciesDay on social media!<\/p>\n

As a pet owner, you may find yourself explaining that looking after a pet is not that different to looking after a child. Although they are lower maintenance in many ways, there are also key similarities. Ensuring that you feed them, play with them, give them enough attention, and take them for medical check-ups are all crucial to keeping them happy and healthy. But beyond food and water, exercise is arguably the most important thing for your pet\u2014 especially if you have a dog. Even if you live in Canada like us, temperate weather is not a good excuse for neglecting exercise during the winter months.<\/p>

Take them for walks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

Despite rain, snow, sleet and ice, it is important to take your pup outside for a little cardio. Simply walking down the street (if that\u2019s as far as you can make it) will be better than nothing for their little hearts, lungs, joints, and bones. Be sure to dress the both of you accordingly\u2014 dog jackets and booties are not just for people who like accessorizing, but often necessary to protect your dog from the elements. If your neighbourhood is heavily salted and your dog refuses paw-wear, be mindful of where they are stepping and wash them off afterwards.<\/p>

Take them to the park<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

On days when the weather is not too <\/em>frightful, time at the park is also enjoyable for dogs, even during colder months. Parks (especially dedicated dog parks) typically allow them more freedom and space to run around, which is great for playing and socializing. Although they can\u2019t exactly tell you, these activities are often necessary to keep your dog happy throughout the grey and gloomy stretch between November and March. Bring a ball with you for a game of fetch, and wear proper footwear so you can run around with them. If other \u201cspirited\u201d pups are there at the same time, be careful they\u2019re not roughhousing or overexerting too much.<\/p>

Play with them indoors<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

There will be treacherous days throughout the winter where Rex or Lucy should only be let out to quickly do their \u201cbusiness.\u201d When that happens, it can be all too tempting to spend the entire time snuggling together on the couch. But in between naps, try grabbing their favourite toys to encourage some activity. If your dog is not particularly playful, entice him or her to move around with a treat ball or another type of food puzzle that can still keep them busy, entertained, and encourage them to take a break from lying down.<\/p>

Ultimately, remember that dogs are like humans in many ways. Since cold and wintery weather conditions can make you both feel down, be sure to keep your mental and physical states in mind by getting up and at \u2018em each day. You can still enjoy a little nap and TV-watching together after having some fun outdoors.
