As an animal lover, the last thing you\u2019d think about is harming your feathery, furry, or scaly friend. But for hundreds of thousands of animals across the country and beyond, this is a reality they know all too well. April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month, and we\u2019d like to shed light on some of the ways you can help prevent animal cruelty in your community.<\/p>\n

What is animal cruelty?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

While animal cruelty is a broad term many of us use to associate harm made against animals, many countries define their own laws about what animal cruelty is considered to be. In Canada, both federal and provincial laws define animal cruelty. For example, this is how it is defined In British Columbia:<\/p>\n

An animal is in distress, according to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA Act)<\/a>, if it is:<\/p>\n

(a) Deprived of adequate food, water, shelter, ventilation, light, space, exercise, care or veterinary treatment,<\/p>\n

(a.1) Kept in conditions that are unsanitary,<\/p>\n

(a.2) Not protected from excessive heat or cold,<\/p>\n

(b) Injured, sick, in pain or suffering, or<\/p>\n

(c) Abused or neglected<\/p>\n

As you can see, animal cruelty covers a wide range of needs that contribute to an animal\u2019s well-being.<\/p>\n

What can you do to prevent animal cruelty?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

There are many ways you can help prevent cruelty to animals. Here are a few for your consideration:<\/p>\n

Adopt<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Did you know that in 2018, Canadian shelters took in more than 81,000 cats and just less than 30,000 dogs<\/a>? While that\u2019s a devastatingly high number, the good news is that many of these animals (62% of cats and 47% of dogs) were adopted into loving homes. By choosing adoption, you are giving many of these animals a second chance.<\/p>\n

On the contrary, many animals, such as dogs, that come from breeders and puppy mills are subject to harsh living conditions including filthy, cramped housing and minimal human contact.\u00a0 While every animal deserves a loving life, puppy mills exist for profit and contribute to overpopulation. Next time you consider adding a pet to your family, strongly consider adoption.<\/p>\n

Report<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

If you see an animal being abused, whether it\u2019s a house pet or wildlife, file a report with your local authorities. It\u2019s our responsibility to ensure that all animals are treated with compassion, love and respect. Of course, ensure your safety and never put yourself in danger if you choose to report someone abusing an animal.<\/p>\n

Reach out your government representatives<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Many federal, provincial, and municipal government laws lack proper protection for animals.\u00a0 Humane Canada<\/a> encourages Canadians to reach out to their Member of Parliament to advocate for comprehensive federal legislation to help improve and safeguard the lives of animals. If we have stricter laws and harsher penalties, these would hopefully act as a deterrent for people who choose to abuse animals. At the municipal level, you can help with the overpopulation crisis by encouraging your city council to adopt lower licensing fees for pet owners who spay and neuter their animals.<\/p>\n

Teach children to respect animals<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Just like how we teach our children manners, it\u2019s important to teach them to respect animals. Since children are so impressionable, ensure you are setting a good example when interacting with animals, whether up close or from afar. Remember that all animals are living beings and should be treated equally; this includes domestic animals such as pets, and wildlife.<\/p>\n

As a pet owner, you may find yourself explaining that looking after a pet is not that different to looking after a child. Although they are lower maintenance in many ways, there are also key similarities. Ensuring that you feed them, play with them, give them enough attention, and take them for medical check-ups are all crucial to keeping them happy and healthy. But beyond food and water, exercise is arguably the most important thing for your pet\u2014 especially if you have a dog. Even if you live in Canada like us, temperate weather is not a good excuse for neglecting exercise during the winter months.<\/p>

Take them for walks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

Despite rain, snow, sleet and ice, it is important to take your pup outside for a little cardio. Simply walking down the street (if that\u2019s as far as you can make it) will be better than nothing for their little hearts, lungs, joints, and bones. Be sure to dress the both of you accordingly\u2014 dog jackets and booties are not just for people who like accessorizing, but often necessary to protect your dog from the elements. If your neighbourhood is heavily salted and your dog refuses paw-wear, be mindful of where they are stepping and wash them off afterwards.<\/p>

Take them to the park<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

On days when the weather is not too <\/em>frightful, time at the park is also enjoyable for dogs, even during colder months. Parks (especially dedicated dog parks) typically allow them more freedom and space to run around, which is great for playing and socializing. Although they can\u2019t exactly tell you, these activities are often necessary to keep your dog happy throughout the grey and gloomy stretch between November and March. Bring a ball with you for a game of fetch, and wear proper footwear so you can run around with them. If other \u201cspirited\u201d pups are there at the same time, be careful they\u2019re not roughhousing or overexerting too much.<\/p>

Play with them indoors<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

There will be treacherous days throughout the winter where Rex or Lucy should only be let out to quickly do their \u201cbusiness.\u201d When that happens, it can be all too tempting to spend the entire time snuggling together on the couch. But in between naps, try grabbing their favourite toys to encourage some activity. If your dog is not particularly playful, entice him or her to move around with a treat ball or another type of food puzzle that can still keep them busy, entertained, and encourage them to take a break from lying down.<\/p>

Ultimately, remember that dogs are like humans in many ways. Since cold and wintery weather conditions can make you both feel down, be sure to keep your mental and physical states in mind by getting up and at \u2018em each day.
