Think of your fur baby.\u00a0 Now think about being separated from them for over six months against your own will.\u00a0 Sounds tough, right?\u00a0 Yet this is what happened to many families at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the story of one family, the Kossakowski\u2019s and their dog, Denny, and how they were resilient in overcoming a gruelling six month separation during COVID-19.<\/p>\n

The Kossakowski\u2019s never expected to be gone from their dog for so long.\u00a0 As Jacenty Kossakowski explains, the family was supposed to reunite with Denny following his 10 day quarantine after arriving in Australia back in July 2021.\u00a0 Unfortunately, cancelled flight after cancelled flight meant the two-week separation turned into a dragged out six month wait before they\u2019d eventually reunite.\u00a0 Luckily, family friends were able to care for Denny in his parents\u2019 absence.<\/p>\n

In order to be a bit closer to Denny, the Kossakowski\u2019s relocated to Warsaw, Poland in October 2021 as they waited for Australia\u2019s borders to reopen.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until three months later, this past January, that the family was finally able to step on a plane that was headed for Australia.<\/p>\n

During their separation, the Kossakowski\u2019s were able to maintain contact with Denny through video chat, but as Jacenty recounts, the virtual experience wasn\u2019t the same as having their fur baby right there with them, especially considering he wasn\u2019t aware that they were there with him in spirit.\u00a0 It was an especially trying time for Denny who even refused to eat the first day he was with his host family, though he eventually became comfortable in his new surroundings.<\/p>\n

The big day to reunite with Denny finally arrived a couple months ago.\u00a0 Even after their joyful reunion, the Kossakowski\u2019s noticed that it took him some time to warm up to them again and reach the same level of emotional bond that they once had.\u00a0 But as bittersweet as this story may be, Denny has a lot to look forward to.\u00a0 In addition to making up for lost time, the Kossakowski\u2019s are excited to show Denny his new home that they\u2019re planning on moving into just before Easter.<\/p>\n

Leave no fur baby behind<\/strong><\/p>

Ask any pet owner and they\u2019ll tell you that their pet is one of the family, and the latest trends for travel reflect that sentiment.\u00a0 According to Hilton Hotel\u2019s recent 2022 travel trends report<\/a>, travellers are expected to bring their pets along with them as they travel the globe.\u00a0 It\u2019s no surprise, considering 3.7 million homes in Canada<\/a> welcomed a new pet since 2020.\u00a0 As well, 7 in 10 Gen Z and Millennial pet parents say they are more likely to travel in the future if pets are welcome, and we all know that many millennials are wanderlusters.<\/p>

Pet-friendly accommodations on the rise<\/strong><\/p>

If you\u2019ve travelled in the past, you know that finding a pet-friendly accommodation was a challenge.\u00a0 However, in 2021, \u201cpet-friendly\u201d was the third most popular search term<\/a> on the Hilton website.\u00a0 That\u2019s telling, especially for the hotel and vacation rental<\/a> industries, and many of them have taken note.\u00a0 One hotel chain - Homewood Suites by Hilton - has now become 100% pet-friendly (we\u2019re sure Paris Hilton\u2019s adoration for dogs had nothing to do with that).\u00a0 Heads up though, we recommend packing a pair of earplugs as things may get noisy!\u00a0 Also, don\u2019t forget to pack your pet\u2019s life jacket and other travel necessities they\u2019ll need for their getaway.<\/p>

Some restrictions remain<\/strong><\/p>

Accommodations may be becoming more pet-friendly, but travelling with a pet is still not a \u201cfree for all\u201d.\u00a0 Many countries still have restrictions in place when it comes to importing animals, so it\u2019s important to stay informed.\u00a0 We recommend checking the appropriate government website<\/a> for the country you plan on visiting to learn about what\u2019s needed for your pet to enter the country as well as what is required for your pet to return home from that country.
